Position: Power System Studies Engineer

Job Description

ESP is looking for a Power System Studies engineer with a minimum of 4 years’ experience to join the Power System Studies and New Energy Innovation team. The position offers a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to be working alongside a highly experienced team of internationally renowned experts on cutting edge local and international projects. The successful candidate will be involved in the following work activities:

  • Develop power system models from physical network characteristics;
  • Conduct power system planning and operational studies including steady state, and dynamic studies from small systems to large-scale interconnected systems;
  • Conduct grid impact and grid code compliance studies for connection of renewable and conventional power plants;
  • Develop models and conduct studies for newer state-of-the-art technologies such as grid forming inverters, hydrogen production systems, etc.;
  • Automation and use of programming and artificial intelligence tools to enhance the power of power system analysis tools;
  • Manage studies projects from inception to close including management clients, budgets and resources and preparation of reports and presentations during the study; and
  • Interface with the other business units within the company on multidisciplinary projects.

Minimum requirements

  • BSc (Elec Eng) with specialisation in power systems or heavy current;
  • ECSA registration will be an advantage but is not a minimum requirement;
  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in power systems studies utilising industry standard power systems analysis tools (e.g. PSSE, PowerFactory, PSCAD);
  • Knowledge of power system planning and operations is essential;
  • Knowledge of grid code requirements will be an advantage;
  • The candidate should possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills combined with sound oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic team-based environment;
  • Experience with electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies will be an advantage; and
  • Python coding and familiarity with emerging AI tools will be an advantage.
